Japan boasts one of the richest and most active art traditions in Asia, if not the world. It is home to some of the earliest known ceramics and the world’s oldest-standing wooden building. Japanese contemporary art also stands among the best globally, widely imitated and avidly collected. Between these chronological extremes lies a treasure trove of Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines from all periods, alongside impressive military architecture. Japan is rich in national, regional, and private art collections, reflecting a long tradition of art-historical scholarship and connoisseurship. Recently, a network of conservation and restoration labs, equipped with the latest technology for archaeological investigation, has been added. Despite the numerous wars and natural disasters that have periodically struck the country, Japanese arts can be enjoyed in extraordinary abundance. The vast majority of important pieces remain within the country.
